How I Discovered a New Way to Understand Dogs

I remember discovering Cesar Millan’s work while researching the best dog trainers in the world. I was impressed by the way he handled different situations, but at the same time, I questioned some of the methods he used. As I mentioned on the homepage,

I completed my training through the CATCH Canine Trainers Academy, where I learned about Operant Conditioning, focusing exclusively on the Positive Reinforcement quadrant.

For me, Cesar Millan’s approach was something completely new, especially because he emphasizes how our own energy and emotional state directly impact our relationship with our dog.

Everything he said made sense to me, yet it contradicted much of what I had been taught—since, in the world of Positive Reinforcement, correction simply doesn’t exist. Driven by curiosity, I started researching Canine Psychology and immersing myself in this new perspective.

I began following other trainers in this field and reflecting on what truly made sense in practice. One of the biggest realizations that motivated me to pursue this path was understanding the importance of seeing things from a dog’s perspective—how they think, interact, and communicate—rather than projecting human concepts onto them.

Dogs are dogs. They belong to a different species, with their own instincts and behaviors. Today, we live in a world where any form of correction is often frowned upon, sometimes even considered abuse.

However, dogs naturally correct each other—through body pressure, a warning growl, a nudge with the nose, a bark, or even a gentle or more intense bite. Within canine communication, there is a clear balance between right and wrong, and when a boundary is crossed, there is an immediate response to restore harmony.

Cesar Millan teaches us to respect this natural order, showing us how to build a relationship with our dogs through a calm and confident energy. He emphasizes the importance of establishing rules and boundaries and creating a relationship built on three fundamental pillars: Trust, Respect, and Love.

In his videos, he demonstrates how owners can communicate more effectively with their dogs, taking on the role of a leader within the family dynamic, just as it would happen in a pack.

I’m truly grateful to have discovered this philosophy because I know how much it has transformed my life and the lives of the clients I work with. When communication becomes clear, a dog’s responses become more intentional.

Once they understand what we expect from them and what they need to do to build a happy and healthy relationship, they naturally seek to connect with us.

This strengthens the partnership more and more, creating a bond of mutual respect and balance between human and dog.
